First Blog: For each of the following items, give a brief description of what they are, and why addressing them may be important in the development of technology integrated lessons.
- Safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology.
- Going over safe, legal, and ethical use of technology in the classroom will be important because this will help protect my students. Going over that once something is on the internet, that will be there for forever because anyone can take a picture from a website and/or text that was written as well. Sometimes kids do not realize the consequences of talking to strangers on the internet and this will impact me as a classroom teacher. I would possibly show them the Dateline: To Catch a Predator because that is real life and there are bad people out there. So, by using safe, legal, and ethical use of our growing technology this is a way that I could protect my students.
- Digital etiquette and responsible social interactions
- Cyber bulling has become a growing issue with students. "Cyber bullying can be very damaging to adolescents and teens. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicide. Also, once things are circulated on the Internet, they may never disappear, resurfacing at later times to renew the pain of cyber bullying" (BullyingStats). I would teach my students about this because this bullying is only becoming more prevalent with our students. Just like when the students were younger when their parents (hopefully) taught them about being good people, I will have to reintroduce it the same stating, " that it is wrong and can have serious consequences." And I will make a rule that teens may not send mean or damaging messages, even if someone else started it, or suggestive pictures or messages." This lesson integrated in to other lessons will hopefully prevent what has recently happened in recent news, a shooting at a high school in Ohio due to bullying where this particular student posted hateful status' on Facebook.
- Meeting diverse needs of learners through learner-centered strategies and equitable access
- For Title One schools it is important accessing information for anything, especially projects and homework. " Access to the Internet in classrooms is more limited in the highest-poverty rural schools than in the low-poverty rural schools. In the highest-poverty rural schools, principals indicated that 19 percent of the classrooms have Internet access, compared with 33 percent in the low-poverty rural schools" (DOE). What I can do for my students and families of the school is push for community center at school parents could come and use. Since there are so many factors for a student not having access: transportation, money, and many others I will need to be an advocate for those students to have an equal opportunity education just like everyone else.
- Global awareness and digital-age communication
- As a teacher in this new technology era, being aware of other cultures and understanding culture sensitive is important because everyone is talking to each other. Explaining to my students that anyone can see their information on the internet all over the world. As students and teachers it is crucial to be aware that as a class, we are not on an island and that we are connected to everyone. Along with taught safe, ethical, and legal use of technology our minds will be more aware of the possible "dangers" of placing information on the computer. There will be a taught and modeled good culture and sensitivity and awareness as well, because there are different cultures, religions, and backgrounds in the classroom and we need to be sensitive to their beliefs, for example kids who are Jewish celebrate Hanukkah and we need to be aware, know, and recognize differences.
